Cash reserve planning

Emergency fund calculator

Turn essential monthly expenses and a chosen safety cushion into a practical savings target and timeline.

How the emergency fund target is calculated

The target equals essential monthly expenses multiplied by the number of months you choose. The calculator subtracts current emergency savings to show the remaining gap, then divides that gap by the monthly contribution and rounds up to a whole month. It assumes no interest, withdrawals, fees, or changes in expenses.

Define essential expenses carefully

Include costs that would continue during an income interruption: housing, utilities, basic groceries, insurance, minimum debt payments, transportation, health care, child care, and required support. Exclude optional spending that you could pause. Review recent statements instead of relying only on memory, and account for irregular essentials by converting them to a monthly amount.

Choose a cushion for your actual risk

There is no universal number of months that fits every household. A stable dual-income household with flexible expenses may choose a smaller cushion than a household with one variable income, dependents, high insurance deductibles, seasonal work, or specialized employment. Test several targets to see the tradeoff between resilience and the time needed to save.

Keep the reserve accessible

An emergency fund is designed for liquidity and reliability rather than maximum return. Consider account access, transfer timing, deposit insurance eligibility, fees, minimum balances, and whether a promotional rate can change. Keeping the fund separate from routine spending may reduce accidental use while preserving access for genuine emergencies.

Build in stages when the full target feels distant

A starter reserve can cover smaller shocks while you work toward the complete target. After reaching the first milestone, reassess high-interest debt, employer benefits, insurance gaps, and other priorities. If the monthly contribution changes, recalculate the timeline rather than treating the first estimate as a fixed promise.

Keep the target connected to the monthly plan

Use the Monthly Budget Calculator to verify that the proposed contribution fits after required expenses and minimum debt payments. Then use the High-Yield Savings Calculator only with a real account APY and disclosure. The net worth and cash-flow guide explains why home equity, retirement assets, unused credit, and total net worth are not substitutes for accessible emergency cash.

This calculator provides general educational arithmetic, not financial, banking, investment, tax, insurance, or legal advice. It does not determine an appropriate reserve for you, predict emergencies, or account for interest, taxes, fees, inflation, changing expenses, or account restrictions.
