How the required final score is calculated
The current coursework grade is multiplied by the portion of the course completed before the final. The remaining points needed to reach the target are divided by the final exam weight. This assumes the current grade already represents every non-final component and those components together equal 100% minus the final weight.
Confirm what the gradebook means
Some gradebooks show a running grade that excludes ungraded work; others treat missing work as zero or display category averages before weighting. Verify that the entered current percentage is the weighted result for all non-final coursework. If other assignments remain, this three-input model is incomplete.
A required score above 100% signals an unreachable target
The calculator still displays the mathematical requirement when it exceeds 100%. Extra credit or a grading policy may change what is possible, but the ordinary final exam alone cannot meet that target on a 0–100 scale. A result at or below zero means the existing coursework already secures the target even with a zero on the final under the stated assumptions.
Weights must use the same grading plan
Enter the final exam’s share of the entire course, not its share of one category. Points-based courses, dropped scores, curves, replacement exams, attendance rules, minimum exam requirements, and category caps require the instructor’s actual formula rather than a generic weighted average.
Use the result for planning, not prediction
The required percentage does not predict performance or guarantee a recorded course grade. Build a study plan around topics and time available, review the syllabus, and ask the instructor or academic adviser when the grading structure is unclear.
