How length conversion works
The converter first expresses the input in meters, then divides by the meter value of the destination unit. Using one consistent base unit avoids building a separate formula for every possible pair and makes reverse conversions use the same defined factors.
International inch, foot, yard, and mile
One international inch is exactly 0.0254 meter. One foot is exactly 12 inches, one yard is exactly 3 feet, and one international mile is exactly 1,760 yards. It follows that one foot is exactly 0.3048 meter and one mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters.
Metric units
Metric conversions use powers of ten: 10 millimeters equal 1 centimeter, 100 centimeters equal 1 meter, and 1,000 meters equal 1 kilometer. Writing the prefixes explicitly helps prevent confusing millimeters with centimeters or shifting the decimal one place instead of three.
Worked examples and checks
Three meters equals about 9.84252 feet because 3 ÷ 0.3048 = 9.8425197. Five kilometers equals about 3.10686 miles. A useful direction check is that a meter is longer than a foot, so a meter value converted to feet should have a larger numeric result.
Do not reuse length factors for area or volume
Length is one-dimensional. Square units require the factor to be squared, and cubic units require it to be cubed. Converting 10 square feet by multiplying only by 0.3048 is therefore incorrect; use the area converter for surfaces and the volume converter for three-dimensional quantities.
Precision and rounding
The result is rounded for readability, but conversion cannot make an original measurement more accurate. Keep extra digits during a chain of calculations and round once at the end according to the measuring instrument and purpose.
