How tax is added
Multiply the price per item by quantity to find the subtotal. Multiply that subtotal by the entered rate divided by 100 to find tax, then add tax to the subtotal.
Choosing the correct rate
Sales-tax rules vary by country, state, province, city, product, buyer, seller, delivery location, and transaction type. Look up the applicable combined rate and whether the item is taxable instead of assuming a nearby rate applies.
Rounding can differ at checkout
A seller may calculate and round tax per item, per line, or on the entire taxable subtotal. Small differences can therefore occur even when the rate is the same. Discounts, coupons, shipping, deposits, and exemptions may also change the taxable base.
A worked entered-rate example
Two items priced at $49.99 create a $99.98 pre-tax subtotal. At an entered 8.25% rate, unrounded tax is $8.24835, which this calculator displays as $8.25, producing a $108.23 total. A real checkout can differ by a cent when it rounds each item or line before summing.
This tool does not look up taxability or location
The same buyer and seller can face different treatment when the product, delivery location, exemption, marketplace, shipping charge, or transaction date changes. Do not use an address from memory or a nearby store’s rate as proof. Verify the taxable base and current combined rate through the applicable revenue authority or transaction system before entering it.
Keep transaction tax separate from price analysis
For a business pricing decision, keep price before tax, tax collected, and customer total as separate rows. Use the GST Calculator when the question is adding or extracting a verified GST rate rather than US-style sales-tax arithmetic. The small-business pricing guide explains why a generic calculator cannot determine nexus, sourcing, place of supply, invoice treatment, or legal reporting.
This calculator applies the rate you enter and does not identify the legally correct rate or taxability. It is not tax advice; the seller’s checkout and applicable rules determine the actual amount.
