How tile quantity is estimated

The rectangular project area is length multiplied by width. The waste percentage increases that area for cuts, breakage, pattern alignment, and spare pieces. Adjusted square footage is divided by one tile’s face area, rounded up to a whole tile, then divided by tiles per box and rounded up again.

Measure the tiled surface, not the room label

For floors, split irregular shapes into rectangles and add them. For walls, calculate each tiled wall section and subtract openings only when tile will truly stop around them. Niches, returns, steps, borders, and tiled faces require their own measurements.

Layout controls waste

Straight layouts with large open runs may use less extra material than diagonal patterns, herringbone, small rooms, many corners, strong veining, or tiles that must be centered. Installer and manufacturer guidance should determine the final allowance. Ordering spare matching dye-lot material can help with later repairs.

Grout joints and nominal dimensions

The model uses the entered tile face dimensions and does not reduce count for grout-joint width. In a real layout, joints affect module spacing and edge cuts but rarely justify ordering less than a face-area estimate with waste. Confirm actual tile dimensions because nominal product names may differ from measured size.

Boxes create purchase overage

The whole-box result can exceed the waste-adjusted tile count. The calculator reports purchased tiles and coverage so that packaging overage remains visible. Verify tiles per box, coverage printed on the carton, minimum-order rules, and whether individual replacement tiles are available.
