Separate fuel from the full driving cost

Distance divided by fuel economy gives estimated US gallons. Multiplying gallons by fuel price gives fuel cost. The calculator then adds any per-mile amount you enter for maintenance, tires, depreciation, or other vehicle costs, plus fixed expenses such as tolls and parking.

Round trips and changing fuel economy

Enter the entire distance you expect to drive, including the return journey and local detours. Actual fuel economy changes with traffic, speed, weather, terrain, idling, load, tire pressure, and vehicle condition. A dashboard average from similar driving may be more useful than an advertised rating.

What belongs in other vehicle cost

For a cash-only trip decision, you may leave the per-mile field at zero. For a broader ownership estimate, use your own expected maintenance and depreciation assumptions. Insurance and registration may be fixed annual costs rather than costs caused by one trip, so include them only when that matches your comparison.

Results use miles, US gallons, and dollars. This planning estimate excludes time value and cannot predict actual traffic, repairs, prices, tolls, or parking.
