From surface area to mulch volume

Mulch is purchased by volume, not simply by surface area. Dividing depth in inches by 12 converts it to feet. Multiplying bed area by depth in feet gives cubic feet, and dividing by 27 gives cubic yards.

Measure beds without double-counting

Split irregular beds into rectangles, circles, triangles, or other simple regions, then add their areas. Subtract large patios, rocks, ponds, or other spaces that will receive no mulch. Small plants usually do not require a separate deduction.

Settling changes the installed depth

Loose material can settle after spreading and weathering. Existing mulch, slope, desired finished depth, particle size, moisture, compaction, and delivery measurement can all affect the quantity needed. The entered depth should represent the new material you intend to add, not automatically the total final layer.

Bulk yards and bags are different purchase paths

The cubic-yard figure helps with bulk orders. Bag count is calculated by dividing cubic feet by the volume printed on one bag and rounding upward. Confirm whether the package states cubic feet, liters, or another unit before entering it.
