How solid colors reveal pixel defects
Different uniform backgrounds make different defects easier to see. Black can reveal pixels that remain bright; white can expose dark pixels and uneven shading; red, green, and blue help isolate color subpixels; cyan, magenta, and yellow exercise pairs of subpixels; neutral grays can reveal tint, banding, clouding, or brightness nonuniformity.
Using the full-screen test
Start the test and allow full-screen mode if the browser offers it. Click or tap the empty color area, use the arrow keys, or press Space to advance. Press H or use “Hide controls” so the control panel does not cover pixels; pressing H again restores it. Exit returns to this explanation. Browser or operating-system bars can remain visible when full-screen mode is unavailable or denied.
Dead, stuck, and bright pixels
A pixel or subpixel that consistently fails to change across backgrounds may be defective, but dust, debris, a reflection, screen coating, content scaling, image retention, cable errors, compression, and graphics-driver problems can look similar. Capture the location, repeat the test after restarting, and compare another input or device where possible. A screenshot cannot record a physical panel defect, so use a separate camera only if documentation is required.
Do not press or flash the panel
Pressing, rubbing, heating, tapping, or running rapid flashing “repair” patterns can damage a display, aggravate symptoms, or create seizure and migraine risks.
