Pace compared with speed
Pace is the time needed to cover one unit of distance, such as 5:00 per kilometer. Speed is distance covered per hour. Runners commonly use pace because it maps directly to split times.
Using race distance
Enter the measured course distance and elapsed finish time. A 5-kilometer result of 25 minutes gives an average pace of 5:00 per kilometer. Actual pace may vary throughout the event.
Planning training
Average race pace can be a useful reference, but training intensity should reflect fitness, recovery, terrain, weather, and professional guidance where appropriate. GPS measurements can also contain small errors.
Build and verify equal splits
A 10 km finish time of 50:00 gives an average of 5:00 per kilometer. At perfectly even pace, the 2 km checkpoints would be 10:00, 20:00, 30:00, 40:00, and 50:00. Adding those five 10-minute segments returns the entered finish time, which is a useful consistency check. Real events rarely produce identical splits, so use the average as a planning reference rather than a prediction of every kilometer.
Convert pace without mixing distance units
Five minutes per kilometer is not five minutes per mile. Because one mile is 1.609344 km, that pace is about 8:02 per mile and about 12 km/h. Confirm the course unit, whether distance is certified or GPS-estimated, and whether elapsed time includes stops. For treadmill comparison, note that belt calibration and incline can differ from outdoor conditions. Record the entered distance and time with the result so later comparisons use the same basis.
