How typing speed is measured

A standardized “word” equals five typed characters, including spaces and punctuation. Gross WPM divides typed characters by five and by elapsed minutes. Accuracy compares each typed character with the character at the same position in the prompt. Accuracy-adjusted WPM uses correctly positioned characters rather than all keystrokes.

Take a consistent test

Choose a duration and passage before starting. Type the displayed text exactly, including capitalization and punctuation. The timer begins when Start is pressed, not on the first keystroke. Correct mistakes normally with Backspace. Longer tests usually reduce the effect of a brief burst, hesitation, or unfamiliar sentence.

What the score does not measure

A short copied passage does not measure composition, editing, ergonomics, sustained work, specialized symbols, language proficiency, or keyboard accessibility. Browser input methods, mobile autocorrection, assistive technology, hardware, fatigue, and passage familiarity all influence results. Compare repeated tests under similar conditions.
