What the word counter measures
The tool counts all Unicode characters, characters after removing whitespace, sentence-like groups ending in common terminal punctuation, and paragraphs separated by blank lines. It uses Intl.Segmenter for locale-aware word boundaries when the browser supports it, with a whitespace-based fallback.
Word boundaries vary by language and purpose
Languages do not all separate words with spaces, and editorial systems may treat hyphenation, contractions, numbers, emoji, URLs, and abbreviations differently. Browser segmentation improves multilingual handling but may not match a publisher, school, court, platform, or billing rule. Use the destination’s official counter when a strict limit controls acceptance.
Reading and speaking times are estimates
The calculator uses 200 words per minute for silent reading and 130 words per minute for speaking. Technical difficulty, language, audience, pauses, slides, accessibility needs, and rehearsal can change actual timing substantially. Treat the estimates as planning ranges rather than deadlines.
Characters with and without spaces answer different questions
Platforms often count spaces and line breaks toward a character limit, while some workflows exclude whitespace. This tool reports both. Unicode characters can also be represented by multiple code points, so a visually perceived symbol may not always equal one technical character in every system.
Text remains in the current browser
The calculation runs locally and Gypes does not intentionally transmit the entered text. Avoid pasting confidential material into any webpage on an untrusted device, because browser extensions, malware, clipboard managers, and shared-device history can still expose content.
