How to test a microphone

Start the test, allow microphone access, and speak at the distance and volume you expect to use. A moving waveform and meter confirm that the browser is receiving a changing audio signal. The RMS value represents the average energy in the current analysis frame; the peak is its largest absolute sample. Both are approximate digital full-scale readings, where 0 dBFS is the maximum representable level.

Interpreting the level

A meter that never moves can indicate the wrong input, muted hardware, blocked permission, disconnected equipment, or an operating-system input level set too low. Frequent clipping indicators mean samples are reaching or approaching full scale and may sound distorted; move farther away or reduce input gain. A visible signal alone does not prove speech is clear, noise-free, synchronized, or routed into another application.

Browser processing changes the signal

Voice processing can include echo cancellation, automatic gain control, and noise suppression. The raw option asks the browser to disable those features, but support varies and the reported active settings remain authoritative. USB interfaces, Bluetooth headsets, operating-system enhancements, drivers, and virtual audio devices can apply additional processing outside this page.

Private local analysis

The live stream is analyzed in the current browser and is not recorded, played through speakers, or intentionally uploaded to Gypes. The media track and audio context stop when “Stop test” is selected, the page is hidden, or the page is left. Browser and operating-system permission controls can deny or revoke access at any time.

This is a basic signal-presence and level check, not a calibrated sound-pressure, frequency-response, latency, intelligibility, medical, hearing, broadcast, or compliance measurement. Use suitable calibrated equipment for critical audio work.
