How to test a keyboard

Select “Start keyboard test,” then press and release each physical key. A key turns orange while it is held and green after a matching release. The event panel shows the browser’s KeyboardEvent.key, physical code, left/right or numpad location, and whether the event is an automatic repeat.

What a missing or stuck result can mean

If a key never lights, retry it while this page remains active. A key left orange did not produce a key-up event; that can indicate a switch problem, a connection interruption, focus change, browser shortcut, or operating-system interception. Reconnect a removable keyboard, try another port, disable remapping software temporarily, and compare in another browser before concluding the hardware has failed.

Layout and browser limitations

The diagram represents a common 104-key US ANSI desktop layout. Laptop, ISO, JIS, ergonomic, media, function-layer, and vendor-specific keyboards may have different keys. Printed characters depend on the selected operating-system layout, while the displayed browser code usually describes a physical position. Some shortcuts and system keys can be captured by the browser or operating system before a web page sees them; this page cannot test firmware, scan codes, wireless signal quality, lighting, or analog actuation.

Keystroke privacy

Testing starts only after the button is selected and stops when requested or when the page is hidden or left. The page does not contain a text field and does not intentionally transmit or store test keystrokes. Avoid typing passwords, payment details, recovery codes, private messages, or other sensitive text into any keyboard test.

This browser test is a troubleshooting aid, not a hardware certification. Confirm suspected failures with the keyboard manufacturer’s diagnostic process or a qualified repair service before replacing equipment.
